{make it mine} Pinteresting Canvas

I wasn’t even sure what to call this project.  Canvas seems a little too plain.  Canvas I found on Pinterest and changed so I could hang it in my bedroom is a little long.  But that’s what it is…a pin I found on Pinterest that I changed to suit me and my bedroom wall.

The pin is on my Make It Mine board.  And the original post is here.  I know Elsie and Emma from A Beautiful Mess made something similar.  That was the original plan…to mask off the letters with vinyl then paint over with a dark wash and peel the letters off to reveal the mod podged vintage book pages beneath.  Good plan except that I COULD NOT decide on a color.  I didn’t want to go too dark and the letters I chose KG Skinny Latte by Kimberly Geswein, were a bit too skinny and I thought you might not could see them clearly.  After letting it sit in my head, (aka putting the canvas away and forgetting about it until last week) I made a plan.  The plan included vintage book pages, whitewashed chevron, black vinyl, and song lyrics.

Let me just tell you that since I decided to use this particular lyric from “You Are My Sunshine,” I cannot get that song outta my head.  Seriously.

First I grabbed a 24×36 canvas at Michael’s with my coupon.  I also picked up Martha Stewart Crafts Tintable Glaze and Multi-Surface Satin Craft Paint in Wedding Cake (on a different trip with another coupon!).  The black vinyl is Silhouette’s vinyl from Michael’s, but they wouldn’t let me use a coupon for that. boo.  Mod Podge and painter’s tape I picked up at Walmart.

I tore the pages out of an old Aesop’s Fables book I bought eons ago.  I trimmed up the pages and mod podged them onto the canvas.  Side note…I think mod podge is hard, y’all.  I’ve used it many times and am just getting to be ok with it.  I got those pages on the best I could.  After the pages were on and dried, I coated that sucker good with mod podge all over and let it dry overnight.

Then I taped off a chevron pattern with painter’s tape.  I didn’t measure, I eye-balled it.

My lovely assistant helped me whitewash.

I cut the letters with my Silhouette and carefully transferred them over.

I love, love, love it.  It’s going to hang in my bedroom.  FYI…I chose this particular part of the song because my hubby and I refer to each other as ‘dear.’  Always have :)

2nd FYI…I wanna make another one!

{FAIL} Maybe not such a good idea…

Just to let you know that not every idea I have necessarily works out…

I bought candy corn and Hershey’s hugs to make these cuties for Halloween

from baking and creating with Avril via cake info and pinned to my board :)

Well, they never got made for Halloween.  But I thought I could maybe change them a bit and use them for Thanksgiving.  I thought the hugs could be bodies, the candy corn could be a beak, mini chocolate chips for eyes…just need something for the waddle (is that what it’s called?).  They could be TURKEYS!  At first I looked at jelly beans for the waddle, but too big I thought.  Then standing in the Walmart checkout I spotted Tic Tacs, in red.  I just knew it would work.

It did not.

Poor guys look kinda like wounded snowmen.

The kids still ate them :)

also, 2 things…

1. start saving toilet paper rolls if you wanna play along with a little idea I have brewing.  I want to use them to wrap little treats.  Not exactly what that looks like yet, but I’m thinking.

2. I picked up the fixin’s for Christmas gifts for teachers today…mini hand sanitizers with holders and little holiday themed tissue packs from the Target dollar spot.  Those along with the free printable I’m working up will get you a teacher (or coworker or bus driver or neighbor) gift for about $2.50 each.

{SVG cuts} {Pinteresting} Halloween Cheesecake Cupcake Rounds

I made something from Pinterest! I knew when I pinned these cute little cheesecakes from my ‘sweets & treats’ board that I wanted to make them soon.  Last Friday was my regular Bunco game.  Halloween themed.  Ever played bunco?  It’s a simple dice game…I always say if it’s something I can do with a drink in one hand and while talking, it’s pretty simple…and it seems to be an Army wife staple.  The best part is getting out of the house for a little while with adults (and especially when hubby has been gone for a while now).  God Bless Bunco.

So, back on topic…little halloween cheesecakes. Super. Easy.  And delish. Risa of Baked Perfection gives very simple, easy instructions on her blog post.  I halved the recipe, made these the night before and left them in the fridge overnight.  The next morning I had an idea in the shower.  Don’t laugh…I seriously have 95% of my ‘good ideas’ in the shower.  I think it’s because no one is calling me or hanging on me or whining to me or asking me questions.  At least not that I can hear.  God Bless Showers.  Anyway, it came to me…cupcake rounds.  I had baked the cheesecakes in cute black and white polka dot liners.  {cause I have a polka dot thing}  I didn’t want cupcake picks to stick in them.  I wanted something simple but cute…knowing that, let’s be real here, any work I put into to these would soon find itself in the trash…I thought this idea would work.  Now I’m not saying that I invented the cupcake round.  I’m just saying I don’t think I’ve seen this anywhere else.

Back on topic again…sorry.  So I drew some a spider and a ‘boo!’on my handy dandy Mac, encircled them (as to fit on the top of the cheesecakes), and made a few svg files.  {svg files are cutting files…they can be used with a digital die cut machines like the Silhouette and its software} I cut the spider and boo circles in black at 2 inches and then cut slightly smaller yellow circles to lie underneath.  I like them.  They were different, easy, cute, and cheap…doesn’t that cover all my bases?

{Do Me a Favor} Wedding Favors

It’s Marry Me Monday…but I think I’m gonna change it up just a little… I’ve been pinning a lot lately on Pinterest.  Like, a lot.  It’s very relaxing to me.  Makes me feel creative…even when I’m not actually doing anything but sitting at the computer.  And since I downloaded the app on my phone, I can pin at soccer practice, piano lessons, and anywhere else I sit and wait on kiddos. So….with Marry Me Monday in mind, I started a new board today.  A board filled with wedding favors.  It was fun.  And I can’t help thinking that a lot of the favor ideas could be tweaked for lots of other events.  Here are some of my favorite pins… cookie favors from Martha Stewart via thebudgetsavvybride.com
